Freelancing offers you the opportunity to decide the direction you want
your career to take. The options are endless, but you need to know what
suits you best, so that you can keep yourself focused and marketable.
What to consider
Specialist or generalist ? You need to decide whether you want to specialise
in a particular niche or be a generalist and how you want to position
yourself - whether hands-on or a senior strategist - a lot of which
depends on your experience.
Which companies?
Part of this also depends on the type of clients you want to work for
and the work that you enjoy doing and are best at. The joy of freelancing
is that you can develop skills along the way, so don't ever have to
feel that you've been pigeon-holed - if you don't like the direction
you're moving towards - change.
Marketing yourself
We help market all of our freelance consultants, but what we say depends
on how they've marketed themselves to us. A portfolio of past work,
case studies and testimonials is an excellent marketing tool - and later
branded stationery or at least a business card adds to your professionalism
when meeting prospective clients.
You must also consider what daily rate you wish to be charged
out at which we can advise you on.
However you choose to work, your clients will judge you by your ability
to deliver quality work to deadlines - so your professional reputation
depends on this.
